Synopsis:
The two young lovers, Jenik and Mařenka, sit in the square of a small Czech village and contemplate their situation. While they are deeply in love, The reality is that Mařenka is promised in marriage to the son of the wealthy landowner, Micha, as arranged by her parents as part of a landlord agreement. Also, Mařenka is concerned about Jenik's mysterious past, and his refusal to want to talk about it. Kecal, the wily marriage broker, is determined to make sure this arrangement proceeds without a hitch, and that Mařenka will marry Micha's son Vašek, and if the drifter Jenik causes any trouble, Kecal vows to give him money to get him out of the picture. Mařenka has no intention of marrying Vašek, whom she has never met, and is determined to have control over her own fate. Also, today is the day that the circus comes to town. How will this all turn out?
